Company History

The Godrej Group was founded in the year 1897 by Ardeshir Godrej and his brother, Pirojsha Birjorji Godrej. The company started operations by manufacturing high-quality locks to compete against British imports. Godrej introduced spring-less locks in 1902, followed by world’s first vegetable oil-based soap, Chavi, in 1918. The company expanded to safes, typewriters and furniture in the 1920 and 30s.

Godrej diversified into refrigerators in the year 1958, followed by steel furniture and other consumer durables in the 1960s. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Godrej expanded to agro-based products, real estate, chemicals, aerospace, defence and engineering. In the year 1993, Godrej Consumer Products was established.

In the 2000s, Godrej became a major player in real estate through its subsidiary, Godrej Properties and in agricultural products through Godrej Agrovet. Godrej Group was restructured into Godrej Enterprises Group and Godrej Industries Group in 2024.

Current Status

Godrej Enterprises Group is currently operating in aerospace, defence, energy, home appliances, advanced engineering and furniture sectors. Godrej Industries Group, on the other hand, operates in multiple sectors like agriculture, chemicals, real estate, financial services and FMCG.

Both Godrej Enterprises Group and Godrej Industries Group are together present in more than 60 countries worldwide. GEG reported an annual turnover of Rs. 18,970 crore in 2024-25, while GIG’s market capitalisation stood at $27.5 billion in 2024.

Future Outlook

Godrej is expected to invest over Rs. 1200 crores in AI, generative AI and digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and customer experience. The group’s motor solutions division is focusing on increasing revenues by 40% in the next three years. Godrej’s consumer products division is expected to expand in emerging markets in the upcoming years.
